What is the best auto box in the world? Yea that's right. the almighty 5G tronic from Mercedes. Hard to beat how easy it is to work on, how durable it is and how little money they cost. This is the LS swap of transmissions.

722.6 automatic transmission is the best automatic gearbox available for diesel performance builds. Today we make the case clearly, cover what makes it exceptional and give an honest comparison against the ZF 8HP.
Three reasons define a great swap transmission. It must be modular so it fits multiple applications. It must be easy to control without complex proprietary systems. It must be strong enough for serious power. The 722.6 fulfils all three completely.
You find the 722.6 behind the Mercedes SLR McLaren, Porsche 996 and 997 Turbo and Mercedes S65 AMG with its 1000 Newton metres of torque stock V12 biturbo engine. The manufacturer trusted this transmission to handle the most powerful engines in their range with a full factory warranty. That tells you everything about its strength.
For our builds the go-to unit is from the Mercedes 320 CDI. This version is among the strongest in the family and costs a few hundred euros at a scrapyard. The 320 CDI unit is widely available, priced reasonably and handles any power level realistic on these engines.
The 722.6 essentially does not break. Run it with some automatic transmission fluid inside and it will not fail. Occasionally you see claims of 722.6 failures online but context matters – most involve running without fluid or other neglect.
The one component that fails on a predictable schedule is the conductor plate – an electronic plate under the transmission housing containing speed sensors. These fail approximately every 15-20 years. Not a frequent problem.
When replacement is needed a conductor plate kit costs approximately 100-120 euros and includes the plate, new sump seals and a transmission oil filter. Installation takes 15 minutes with the transmission in the car. This is the complete maintenance picture for a transmission that otherwise lasts indefinitely.
The 722.6 with an Off-Highway controller is the simplest possible automatic transmission installation for a swap build. Connect the controller, put the selector in Drive and drive. It works immediately without mapping, without custom TCU programming and without specialist knowledge.
Once running you can tune the shift firmware to improve response and harshness. But the baseline out of the box is already functional. This is a significant practical advantage over more complex alternatives.
The 320 CDI bell housing pattern does not match the OM606 directly. This is not a problem. Remove the bell housing and fit the correct pattern for your engine. The 722.6 bell housing is interchangeable across inline four, five and six cylinder applications and many V6 and V8 applications. Adapter plates are available for LS3 and other engines where no direct bell housing exists.
This modularity means one transmission type covers almost any application.
The 8HP is a genuinely good transmission. Modern, fast shifting and available in more gear ratios than the 722.6. However:
Cost – 8HP is at minimum double the price of a comparable 722.6. Often significantly more.
Complexity – the stock Mechatronic unit in the 8HP requires specialist TCUs to operate outside its original application. Most builders must remove the Mechatronic, install aftermarket circuit boards, fill with epoxy and map a custom TCU. This is time consuming, expensive and requires specialist knowledge.
The 722.6 Off-Highway controller costs peanuts by comparison and requires no custom mapping to function.
Clutch pedal option – some 8HP setups allow clutch pedal operation for a manual feel. The 722.6 does not offer this. In full automatic mode the 722.6 provides strong engine braking and shifts hard enough to feel like a baseball bat to the back – satisfying but not manual transmission feel.
The 8HP hype follows the same pattern as the OM648 hype. It is a good product elevated beyond its actual advantage by community enthusiasm. The 722.6 is not fashionable. It is simply the correct tool for this application.
