Mercedes diesel injection pump selection is one of the most critical decisions in any OM606 or OM605 engine build.

Hi guys, my name is Fred and I'm from Sweden.

In Sweden we are nuts about power. We don't care much about low-end torque or drivability – we want maximum power. The BMW turbo builds you've seen online? Many of them were born here. Companies like Pure Performance Factory invented them, and now every 18-year-old in Sweden has a 500 horsepower BMW beater. That's how serious we are about power.

So of course we tune Mercedes diesel engines – the OM604, OM605, OM606, and the older ones too: OM601, OM602 and OM603. We know what works and what doesn't because we've done it all. We've trashed engines, gearboxes, diffs – all of it. So if you want quality parts and real knowledge, you buy from Sweden.

The Injection Pump is the Heart of Your Build

The diesel injection pump is the single most important component in your engine build. If you cheap out on the pump, nothing else matters. It doesn't matter how fancy your turbo is – without the right pump you will not get the results you expect.

The pump defines the characteristics of your engine. The RPM limit is set in the pump. If you run a hot pump like an RS203 with 8mm elements, it might be a little jerky – it can push fuel faster than your turbo can spool, causing smoke. On the other hand, if you run a lower pump with 7.5mm elements and you're targeting 600 horsepower at 7000 RPM, you're not going to get there either.

You cannot just order a pump without specifying exactly what you need. The pump builder builds what you ask for – but if you don't communicate your goals, they can't optimize it for your specific build.

RS Numbers Explained – Low RS vs High RS

Everyone online is running RS203 pumps with 7.5mm elements. And yes, for some builds that's the right setup. But for most builds – it isn't.

We categorize pumps as Low RS, High RS and 200 RS. In the six-cylinder engines it's typically RS203, while the five-cylinders use RS201.

What Most Builders Actually Need

When I look at what people are building on Facebook and forums, most of you want a daily driver. Most are targeting 300 to 450 horsepower – not an all-out race engine. For that kind of build you need something gentle and drivable.

For a daily driver targeting 400-450 horsepower you want:

  • Low RS pump
  • 8mm elements
  • Short injection duration
  • Normal Diesel Mekano settings

Short injection duration means less heat, less smoke and a much more civilized driving experience – as close to a modern common rail as an old indirect injection engine can get.

450 Horsepower is Low Power in a OM606

Here's some perspective: 450 horsepower in an OM606 is considered low power. A good engine makes 500 horsepower. High power builds go well beyond that. So if you're targeting 450, you still have plenty of headroom and don't need to go aggressive on the pump setup.

At 450 horsepower you can still run 7.5mm elements on full fuel – yes it will smoke a little and run slightly hotter with a longer injection duration, but it's manageable if you're pushing the car hard. For daily driving though, stick with the low RS 8mm setup for a clean, reliable, smoke-free result.

Buy From People Who Support You

There's a lot of misinformation circulating on Facebook, YouTube and forums. Keyboard experts who have never built an engine giving confident advice. It's damaging to this community.

What I respected about working with Diesel Mekano was the communication. I could specify exactly what each customer needed for their specific build, and every single one of those builds turned out great because we had the right components.

Buy from people who answer your questions. Buy from people who support you after the sale. You work hard for your money – make sure it goes to someone who helps you get the result you're paying for.

Mr. Diesel Mekano himself is a perfect example of how you build a brand. People in Australia, New Zealand, Abu Dhabi and Mexico know what Diesel Mekano is. That doesn't happen by accident – it happens by genuinely helping people.

Summary: Mercedes Diesel Injection Pump – Heart of Your Build

  • The injection pump is the most important component in your build
  • Most daily driver builds need a Low RS pump with 8mm elements
  • Communicate your exact goals to your pump builder
  • 450 horsepower in an OM606 is still considered low power
  • Buy from suppliers who support you
