Transcript

A honest conversation about time management in small motorsport engineering businesses. Fred explains why support conversations cost hours of productive time every day and what you can do to help the small companies you love stay in business.

Motorsport engineering business reality is something nobody talks about openly. Today we do – because some of the best small companies in this industry are close to quitting entirely.

The Hidden Cost of Support

Most companies in this industry are one or two person operations. Every message you send starts a conversation – not just a quick answer. A proper support conversation to make sure you actually understand what you're asking about takes 20 to 30 minutes minimum.

Ten people asking questions in one day equals 200 to 300 minutes. That's three to five hours out of a ten hour working day. Gone. Not spent making parts, not spent shipping orders, not spent developing new products.

Five hours of support means five hours less of actual work. Your order that could have shipped today now ships in four days.

This is Not a Complaint – It's a Reality Check

Everyone in this industry loves helping you. Answering technical questions about products, installations, build choices – that's genuinely rewarding work. If you ask what drill bit to use when tapping your block for M11 head studs that's a valid question about a product you're buying and the answer will always come quickly and happily.

But questions like "have you shipped today?" or "what courier do you use?" or "can you ship faster?" – these help nobody. The order will not ship faster because you asked. It will actually ship slower because the time spent answering took away from packing and shipping time.

Check your email. Check your messenger. A tracking number will appear when your order ships. That's the answer to all shipping questions.

The Bigger Problem

Some of the best people in this motorsport engineering business are genuinely close to changing their business model or quitting entirely. They work eight hours at a regular job, commute two hours, have families and then try to run a specialist parts business on top of that. Answering fifty messages a day about shipping times is not sustainable.

These are the people developing new solutions, testing products, sharing knowledge and keeping this community moving forward. Losing them hurts everyone.

What You Can Do

Before sending a message ask yourself one question – is this something I genuinely need an answer to right now, or can I find the answer elsewhere?

Technical questions about products, installation procedures, build advice – always ask. That's what these businesses exist for.

Order status, shipping times, courier choices – check your email first. Give it a reasonable amount of time. Trust that your order is being handled.

The less time spent on unnecessary messages the more time spent on shipping your parts, developing new products and supporting the community that makes this all possible.

Summary

  • Motorsport engineering business operations are mostly one or two person companies
  • Each support conversation takes 20-30 minutes of productive work time
  • Ten conversations per day equals three to five lost working hours
  • Technical product questions are always welcome and will always be answered
  • Shipping status questions slow down the very shipping you're asking about
  • The best small companies in this industry need your patience to survive and keep developing

Keep the orders coming. Ask your real questions. We love you. Bye bye!
