OM606 overfueling is one of the most common problems I see every single day. And the heat it creates? Overheating engines, trashed builds, wasted money. Let's fix that.

How Diesel Engines Work – The Opposite of Petrol

A diesel engine shares about 99% of its components with a petrol engine. Rods, pistons, camshafts, valve springs – mostly the same. But they work in completely opposite ways.

A petrol engine runs on air. That's why it has a throttle body. More air equals more revolutions, more air equals more power. Too little fuel and it gets hot – so when tuning petrol engines we add a little fuel to cool things down.

A diesel engine has no throttle. It doesn't care about air at all. It runs on fuel only. More fuel equals more revolutions. Less fuel equals less revolutions. That's it.

Why This Matters for Tuning

Once you understand that diesel and petrol engines work in opposite ways, you can start understanding what goes wrong in most builds.

Most people think about diesel engines like petrol engines. They try to regulate air, they add wastegates, they tune them like they would a petrol car. That's wrong and it causes problems.

When we add fuel to a diesel engine we add heat – unlike petrol where adding fuel cools things down. So to manage that heat we need air. We need boost to put the fire out.

So the process is simple:

  • Big pump with lots of fuel capacity
  • Add boost to manage the heat and combustion
  • Result: power without destroying your engine

The Wastegate Problem

Why do people put wastegates on OM606 builds? It makes no sense.

Mercedes fitted a wastegate to the stock OM606 for one reason only – regulation. The factory engine makes 177 horsepower and Mercedes needed to ensure it couldn't exceed that if the injection pump malfunctioned and added extra fuel. It's a regulatory device, not a performance device.

When you're building a performance engine you don't have those regulations. You want the engine to work properly every day. A wastegate on a performance diesel build is not only unnecessary – it's potentially dangerous.

Here's why: if your turbo starts failing and pushing oil through the compressor housing, that oil goes through the intercooler, through the intake and into the engine. Now you have way more fuel than you set. If your wastegate opens at that point you stop the overfueling and overheating – but you also lose the warning sign that something is wrong. You'll keep driving and trash your engine.

Without a wastegate you'll see on your boost gauge that boost is climbing higher than normal. That's your warning. Stop the car.

How to Set Boost on a Diesel Engine

You don't need a wastegate to set boost on a diesel. Here's how it actually works:

Set your injection pump to a certain fuel volume – let's say 100cc. Your turbo will boost to a certain pressure, maybe 7 PSI. Turn the pump up and fuel volume increases – boost pressure increases automatically. Turn it up more and you're at 28 PSI, two bar.

You regulate boost with fuel. It's that simple.

So if you want to run two bar of boost, set your fuel to the level that produces two bar. Go out to the garage, pull that wastegate off, drive the car. If it's boosting more than yesterday – you were overfueling. Turn the fuel down to where you want to be.

Why Are Companies Selling Wastegates for Diesel Builds?

There are two possibilities. Either they don't know what they're doing, or they don't care about your engine and just want to sell products. Neither is acceptable when you're spending hard-earned money on a serious build.

Do your research. Buy from people who actually know diesel engines and care about your result.
