OM606 tuning guide covering the three variables that actually determine how your engine runs. Everything else is secondary. Get these three right and the build will be good. Get them wrong and nothing else will fix it.

The Three Variables That Matter

On the Mercedes OM60x engine family there are three things you can control that directly affect engine performance and running quality. Everything else – turbo size, manifold choice, intercooler – has less impact than getting these three correct.

Variable One – Injection Timing

Timing is adjusted with the small eight millimetre screw on the side of the pump. Turn it and the injection angle changes which in turn changes timing. This is straightforward to adjust and has been covered in detail in a previous video.

The engine will start and run across a wide range of timing settings. It does not care particularly about being precisely on specification. What does care is the power output, the responsiveness and how the engine acts at different load points. Correct timing makes all of these better. Within a reasonable range the engine runs – outside that range it still runs but not as well as it could.

Do not be afraid of adjusting timing. Log EGT before and after. Note what changes. This is how you build knowledge about your specific engine.

Variable Two – Injector Pop Pressure

People who say to run stock pop pressure do not know what they are talking about. It will work. It is not optimal.

Stock naturally aspirated injectors open at 115 bar. Turbo injectors open at 135 bar. The pop pressure increase does not increase fuel flow – the injectors flow the same volume. What it changes is spray atomisation and injection characteristics.

Setting pop pressure to 150 bar provides multiple benefits beyond the pressure increase itself. The process requires removing the injectors and testing them on a pop pressure tester. This is where you discover whether your 20-25 year old injectors have a correct spray pattern. A bad spray pattern means incomplete combustion, rough idling, failed pre-chambers and general poor running. The pop pressure test reveals problems that cannot be found any other way.

Injector testing and pop pressure adjustment is not optional on a serious build. It is how you know your injectors are working correctly rather than guessing.

Variable Three – Injection Angle

This is the most important variable and the hardest to change because it is built into the pump elements at construction. Injection angle is the number of crankshaft degrees during which fuel is injected per cycle. Short injection angle means rapid, efficient combustion with low heat and low smoke. Long injection angle means heat, smoke and inefficiency.

You cannot change injection angle after the pump is built without rebuilding the pump with different elements. This is why element selection at the time of pump building is so critical and why this has been covered extensively in previous videos.

When you buy a performance pump from a reputable builder specify the injection angle characteristics you want. The element choice determines this more than anything else.

Following Recipes Without Understanding

A friend built a 700 horsepower petrol car using an exact recipe copied from a successful build. Same components, same specification. The result was technically correct – it made 700 horsepower. But the power curve was terrible. Full boost arrived at 5500-6000 RPM. Nothing below that. The car was undriveable in normal conditions. He drove it for three weeks, ran one drag race event and sold it.

The recipe was correct for someone else's build with someone else's goals in a different chassis. Applied without understanding it produced the wrong result.

This applies equally to diesel builds. Copying a setup from the internet without understanding why each component was chosen for that specific application does not guarantee the same result. Ask questions. Understand what each variable does. Build with knowledge rather than recipes.

When to Use a Professional Tuner

If you are not an experienced tuner do not tune your own car. This applies to both petrol and diesel builds.

You would not service the brakes on a 700 horsepower car without knowing what you are doing. Tuning deserves the same respect. An experienced tuner with a dynamometer and proper equipment will produce a better result than any self-tuning attempt by someone without that background.

The DSL1 standalone ECU is more capable and easier to work with than most factory ECUs. A good tuner will be able to tune it effectively. The pump characteristics map is a specialist area but an experienced tuner works through these challenges the same way they work through difficult fuel tables on petrol applications – with experience, methodical testing and the right equipment.

Build the car correctly. Take it to a tuner. Get it mapped. Drive it.
