OM606 wastegate use is one of the most debated and misunderstood topics in diesel tuning. Today we settle it clearly – why diesel engines do not need wastegates, when they are used correctly in advanced builds and why the common justifications for fitting one are wrong.
A diesel engine regulates boost with fuel. More fuel equals more exhaust gas which equals more turbo speed which equals more boost. Less fuel equals less boost. This relationship is direct and linear.
If you want less boost turn your fuel down. If you want more boost turn your fuel up. That is the complete boost control system for a mechanical pump diesel build. No wastegate required, no boost controller required, no additional components required.
This has been covered in previous videos but the wastegate questions keep coming so here it is again.
The most common justification for fitting a wastegate is improved spool. This is physically impossible and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of how wastegates work.
A wastegate is set to open at a specific boost pressure. Below that pressure the wastegate is closed. Above that pressure it opens and releases exhaust gas, preventing boost from rising further.
If your wastegate is set to open at two bar it is completely closed and has no effect whatsoever below two bar. During spool – which happens entirely below target boost – the wastegate is closed. It cannot affect spool because it is not doing anything yet.
If your turbo spools faster with a wastegate fitted it is because something else changed in your setup at the same time. The wastegate itself contributed nothing to spool improvement.
Some argue that diesel engines need either a wastegate or a VNT turbo to control boost – pointing to the fact that all turbocharged engines need some method of controlling turbine speed.
The Porsche 997 and later models are the perfect counter-argument to this thinking. These cars use VNT turbos AND have wastegates. Why? Because on a petrol engine the VNT alone is not sufficient for boost control – petrol engines genuinely need a wastegate regardless of turbo technology due to how throttle, load and boost interact.
Now look at every diesel car from every manufacturer that uses VNT turbos. None of them have wastegates in addition to the VNT. Not one. The manufacturers understood long ago that on a diesel engine wastegates are not necessary. VNT is used purely for spool improvement – getting boost to arrive earlier in the RPM range. Boost control is handled entirely by fuel.
If diesel engines needed wastegates the way petrol engines do every VNT diesel would have both – exactly like the Porsche. They don't. Because diesel boost control works completely differently.
On our modified builds we don't even need VNT. We control boost with fuel. Turn it up, boost goes up. Turn it down, boost goes down. The turbo does exactly what the fuel tells it to do.
There are genuinely intelligent builders in this community – some in Australia, some in Scandinavia – who use wastegates on their OM606 builds. This does not contradict everything above because they are doing something completely different.
These builders run programmable ECUs with full boost mapping. They do not set a wastegate to a fixed pressure and leave it. They use the wastegate to make small, precise adjustments at the top of the RPM range – bleeding small amounts of boost pressure to manage the boost curve at specific RPM points.
This is not boosting faster. This is precision boost management using hardware that most builders do not have and skills that require genuine understanding of engine management.
If you have a mechanical pump and no ECU mapping knowledge this does not apply to you. Do not fit a wastegate because you read that experienced builders use them. Context matters entirely.
Some people argue that the stock OM606 has a wastegate so performance builds should too.
The stock OM606 makes 177 horsepower with a stock injection pump. The wastegate is fitted to prevent the engine from exceeding its factory power rating if the injection pump malfunctions and delivers excess fuel. It is a regulatory device, not a performance device.
A performance build making 400 horsepower with a rebuilt injection pump deliberately set to a higher fuel volume has no need for the regulatory device that existed to prevent the stock engine from accidentally making too much power.
