OM60x engine swap builds are more versatile than any other diesel engine family available today. Today we make the case for why the Mercedes OM601 through OM606 series is the best swap engine in the world and cover what makes each engine in the family different.

What Makes a Good Swap Engine

Three criteria define a genuinely good swap engine.

First – it must be able to run standalone. If an engine requires complex electronics, proprietary modules or manufacturer specific systems to function it becomes a difficult swap. A good swap engine runs mechanically with minimal external requirements.

Second – it must come in different sizes. A single displacement engine limits which chassis it can fit. A family of engines in different sizes means one of them fits almost anything.

Third – it must be able to do what you want. Towing, drifting, rock crawling, daily driving – one engine family cannot truly be the best swap option unless it covers the full range of use cases.

Why the OM60x Series Meets Every Criterion

The OM60x engine swap family covers six engines: OM601, OM602, OM603, OM604, OM605 and OM606. Four cylinder, five cylinder and six cylinder versions in two and four valve configurations. This range of sizes means one of these engines fits almost any chassis.

The engines run completely mechanically. No electronics required for the engine to fire and run. No water pump, no alternator, no power steering pump, no belt – the engine itself needs none of these to operate. Electric versions of these ancillaries can be added for modern builds but the engine core is entirely independent. This makes installation in any chassis genuinely straightforward.

Power range spans from a gentle naturally aspirated daily driver at under 200 horsepower to built high boost race engines at over 700 horsepower revving to 8000 RPM. A diesel engine with 22:1 compression producing over 100 horsepower per cylinder and revving to 8000 RPM is not something that should be possible. These engines do it. This range means the same engine family suits gentle towing builds and extreme performance builds equally.

The Six Engines – What Separates Them

OM601, OM602, OM603 – the older two valve family. Four cylinder, five cylinder, six cylinder. 8, 10 and 12 valve. Available in 2.0, 2.2 and 2.3 litre for the OM601 depending on market. OM602 in 2.5 litre standard and 2.9 litre long stroke. OM603 in 3.0 litre standard and 3.5 litre long stroke. All available as naturally aspirated and turbocharged. Turbo versions have oil squirters for piston cooling. Naturally aspirated versions do not.

OM604, OM605, OM606 – the newer four valve family. Four cylinder, five cylinder, six cylinder. 16, 20 and 24 valve. More modern construction, slightly stronger, more expensive. The OM604 was never offered as a turbocharged engine from the factory. OM605 and OM606 available as naturally aspirated and turbocharged. All versions of all three – naturally aspirated and turbo – have oil squirters fitted.

Durability That Has to Be Experienced

Engines from this family regularly reach one million kilometres in taxi service. Not as exceptional builds – as stock engines with regular oil changes.

When these engines are disassembled after 500,000 kilometres the bearings look like they were installed yesterday. The bore still shows the original honing crosshatch marks. The only components that show age are external seals – valve stem seals, front and rear main seals, valve cover gaskets. Replace these and the engine feels and performs as new. Everything internal is untouched by time.

Mechanical or EDC Pump

The OM60x engine swap can run with a fully mechanical injection pump requiring no electronics whatsoever. Turn the key, the engine runs. No ECU, no sensors, no wiring beyond what moves the throttle lever.

Alternatively the EDC pump – a hybrid mechanical pump with an electronic actuator – allows full mapping through a DSL1 standalone ECU. This enables precise fueling control, boost management and CAN bus communication with other systems including the 722.6 automatic transmission shift controller. Both approaches work excellently. Choose based on your goals and desired level of control.
