Propshaft and driveshaft guide for Mercedes and BMW based engine swap builds. Today we cover how to correctly modify a propshaft when fitting a non-original transmission, differential swaps and why doing the groundwork yourself is the only real solution.

Why Propshafts Cannot Simply Be Swapped

Mercedes and BMW vehicles are remarkably modular – engines, gearboxes and differentials cross over between models more than most people realise. The propshaft is the exception.

Most of these cars use a two-piece propshaft with a centre support bearing mounted to the chassis. This divides the propshaft into a front section connected to the transmission and a rear section connected to the differential.

When you fit a transmission that was never designed for this chassis the distance from the gearbox output to the centre support bearing changes. The rear section remains correct – it connects to the differential which you can address separately. Only the front section requires modification.

The Correct Propshaft Modification

Never cut and weld the rear section. Never cut close to the centre support bearing mounting. The modification happens at the front – as close to the gearbox end as practical.

The process:

Cut approximately 60-65mm from the front of the original propshaft – just enough to remove the original gearbox flange end while leaving usable tube.

The new front section comes from the transmission you are fitting. For BMW transmissions this is straightforward – take the BMW propshaft front section. It bolts to the BMW gearbox output flange correctly.

The two tube sections – original propshaft and new gearbox section – will have different diameters and cannot simply be butted together. Machine a sleeve piece approximately 100-125mm long that fits inside both tubes simultaneously, 50mm into each. This sleeve aligns the two sections perfectly.

Weld both joints. The propshaft is now correctly shortened, properly aligned and connects your BMW transmission to the original centre support bearing and rear section.

Flexible Coupling – The Rubber Donut

The rubber coupling that connects the propshaft to the transmission output flange is available in versions compatible with various bolt patterns. If the original rubber coupling from your chassis fits the new transmission output use it. If not use the coupling from the transmission – the propshaft will bolt to whichever coupling is fitted.

Vibration Problems

If vibrations appear after installation the cause is almost always transmission mount height rather than propshaft balance. The front propshaft section must run straight from the gearbox to the centre bearing. If the gearbox is sitting too high or too low the propshaft runs at an angle and vibration results.

Shim the transmission mount up or down until the front propshaft section runs straight and level. The vibration disappears. Ask how this knowledge was acquired.

Differential Swaps

Mercedes and BMW differentials are similarly modular across chassis. Most differentials fit most chassis with minor modifications. The rear cover of the differential is often the only component that differs between applications – swap the rear cover from your original differential to the new unit and it fits your car's mounting points.

Driveshafts – From Differential to Wheels

When swapping differentials the driveshafts – the shafts from the differential to the rear wheels – may not fit. The flanges at the differential end may be different sizes. 90mm, 100mm or 110mm bolt circle diameters are common and do not cross over directly.

Driveshafts can be partially disassembled. The CV joints or knuckles at each end come off leaving a steel shaft with splines. If the splines match your differential output shaft the original driveshaft end can be used with a different shaft. If the flanges do not match source compatible driveshafts from scrapyard Mercedes vehicles.

The Scrapyard Method

Bring a caliper, a tape measure and something to record measurements. Go to the scrapyard. Find Mercedes vehicles of various models. Measure the driveshaft flange diameters. Measure the shaft lengths. Compare to what your build requires.

This takes an afternoon. It is not complicated. The information you gain is exact and specific to your actual components rather than forum speculation from people who also did not measure.

W126, W124, W201, W210 – they are all there. The parts often cross over between them in ways nobody on the internet knows because nobody went and measured. You will know because you went and measured.
